To put it in perspective, imagine 12 miles of Christmas lights. In the words of Tim-The-Tool-Man-Taylor, we will need "MORE POWER"…
Leavenworth Makes Changes To December Lights Festival
Not only that, but there are super fun activities (think chestnut roasting, sleigh rides, Santa Claus...pretty much anything you'd find in a White Christmas scene) and if the weather is freezing - which often is - you couldn't find yourself in a better place to fit in. Leavenworth boasts some of the cutest shops and best comfort food restaurants in Washington. And we're not just saying that...
That's a bit tricky to answer because the lights come on at the beginning of December and actually stay on until Valentine's Day. BUT, you definitely want to hit one of the three weekends listed below because that's when the actual Light Ceremonies take place and light up the whole city at once. This is also the time when many of the other celebrations take place.
Note: we are not sponsored by any of the companies below...we just think they look like fun ways to enhance your trip to Leavenworth.

If you Google "how to get to the Leavenworth Christmas Festival" you will probably find articles about "The Snow Train". Does that sound magical? Indeed.
The Snow Train to Leavenworth basically includes a full day tour, including breakfast and dinner, and a train that goes directly into the city and back from Everett, Edmonds, or Seattle. Rumor has it that Santa will even make an appearance along the way…
If you are 6+, South Excursions offers bus tours to Leavenworth from Bellevue and Seattle. You can even take your sled with you! (Did we mention this festival also has a bunch of people going sledding?)

Another option for the trip is a bus that leaves from Seattle Center. About 2 1/2 hours drive and the whole trip takes about 12 hours.
You can also pack up the whole family and go to Leavenworth by yourself. Because of its central location in Washington State, Leavenworth is actually a fairly reasonable drive from most parts of the state. Many people like to stay overnight.
Tip: If you get there on a Thursday or Friday night, you can avoid some of the traffic and crowds. The lighting ceremony only takes place on Saturday and Sunday evenings, but there are still parties on Friday evenings and many of the local shops have fun too.
You're almost in the clear... wait until 4:30pm and then shoot and film all night! But wait... why did you run out of battery???
Family Friendly Activities For Christmas In Leavenworth
Your phone and camera batteries tend to drain faster than usual when you're in Leavenworth, especially if you use your phone all day without WiFi and can't recharge it. This is because a drop of 20 degrees Fahrenheit can cause the battery to drain MUCH faster.
For DSLR users, you'll want to take extra batteries and try to keep them in a warm place like your hotel room. More details on how to protect your luxury camera in cold weather can be found here. You'll want to make sure you also have a phone charger for your phone with you, even if you're going on a day trip.
Can't you imagine? Snuggled under a warm blanket, sipping hot cider... the only sound you hear is the little "swish" of your sled as you slide down the frothy snow streams and enjoy the natural beauty around Leavenworth. Before we get carried away, let's give a warning that everything depends on the weather. Find your ideal sleigh ride here.
