Seattle Patriot Express - Passengers arrive at Yokota Air Base, Japan aboard the Patriot Express on March 23, 2010.

Starting next month, Patriot Express flights from Seattle-Tacoma and Baltimore-Washington International Airports will conduct random testing of soldiers, their families and other eligible customers. Stars and Stripes, citing an internal notice from the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center, first reported the news.

"The Department of Defense is working aggressively to help keep passengers safe and reduce the spread of COVID-19 on Patriot Express flights and has developed a plan for rapid onsite testing," an airline spokesperson said in a statement. Thursday AMC oversees charter flights.

"This development plan requires airport COVID-19 testing prior to departure," Ferrara said. "On-site tests will give travelers, the Department of Defense and others greater confidence that passengers meet all requirements for safe travel to and from allied countries."

Ferrara added that procurement of COVID-19 testing equipment is underway. While the notice said testing would begin on October 30, it said testing at departure airports in the continental United States should begin in November.

Patriot Express flights are used by Defense Department personnel traveling between duty stations, including overseas. Veterans, retirees and eligible federal employees may also access standby flights on a case-by-case basis.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon unveiled a new study, involving Patriot Express' two most-used airliners: the Boeing 767-300 and 777-200, that looked at how airborne particles move through aircraft.

For about a week, the researchers dispersed aerosol particles to test their distribution path, simulating it both in flight and on the ground. Scientists have discovered that due to sophisticated air particle filtration and ventilation systems in airplanes, the lifetime of suspended particles inside the cabin is very short.

"The favorable results are attributed to the combination of the cell's high air exchange rate, along with the recirculating High Efficiency Particulate Air Filtration (HEPA) system and the downward airflow ventilation design, resulting in rapid dilution and purification of aerosol particles," Vice Admiral D. L. Mewbourn, deputy commander, US Transportation Command, said during a virtual roundtable with reporters on Oct. 15.

Although spending more time on an airplane increases a person's risk, even passengers on long-haul flights may not be able to accumulate enough viral load to get sick under test conditions, according to the study.

Passengers traveling on the 777 must spend at least "54 hours seated next to an index patient in economy" and more than 100 hours in other cabins on both the 777 and 767 to be exposed to an infectious dose, the study found..

Also, masks made all the difference. Mannequins representing passengers were placed throughout the aircraft, some wearing masks and some without, to simulate particle distribution, specifically exposure to another coughing passenger.

During the simulated cough test, the masked dummies "showed a very, very large reduction in the amount of aerosol that would come out of [them], in most cases more than 95%," said David Silcott of S3i, a partner at DARPA. Silcott was also one of the authors of the report.

The findings have caveats: The scientists did not attempt to simulate passengers moving around the cabin, changing seats, or facing each other for conversation.

"While … we're very encouraged by the results, that's one reason we're making them public and sharing them with the scientific community so that further research can be done," said Navy Lt. commander Joseph Pope, Transcom Operations Directorate Liaison for Airflow Particle Testing.
